Somalis ‘made to view executions’

Published by admin under shoes

Hundreds of people in Somalia have been forced to watch Islamist militants executing two people accused of spying.
People in Merca said al-Shabaab militia patrolled the town with loudspeakers, demanding they attend the executions.
The militants also ordered schools to close for the day as they were keen for children to watch the two men being shot dead by a firing squad.
Most of those at the execution, on a patch of open ground, are reported to have been women and children.
It is becoming something of a pattern for al-Shabaab to encourage young people to engage in violence.
It recently organised a quiz for young men in the southern town of Kismayo.
The prizes included AK-47 assault rifles, hand grenades and anti-tank mines.
The aim, said al-Shabaab, was to stop young men from wasting time, and to focus on important things like defending their territory and their religion.
At the prize-giving ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of people, the militants urged parents to teach their children to handle weapons at an early age.
Somali children’s rights groups say al-Shabaab is intent on brainwashing the young to believe in violent Islamism.
In this way, it can ensure it has a steady supply of recruits, ready to fight for its aim of establishing extreme Islamist rule, not only in Somalia but far beyond its borders.

Iraq shoe thrower ‘was tortured’

Published by admin under shoes

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former US President George W Bush says he was tortured by senior government officials while in jail.
Shortly after his release from nine months in a Baghdad prison, Muntadar al-Zaidi demanded an apology – and said he would name the officials later.
Iraqi officials told the BBC his claims should be investigated.
His protest last December made him a hero for many people. He was convicted of assaulting a foreign leader.
Initially, he was sentenced to three years in jail.
But he had the term reduced to 12 months on appeal and was released three months early for good behaviour.
After his release on Tuesday he told journalists: “I am free again, but my homeland is still a prison.”
Reuters news agency reported he was slurring his speech because of a missing tooth.
He went on to say he had suffered beatings, whippings, electric shocks and simulated drowning at the hands of officials and guards.
“At the time that Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said on television that he could not sleep without being reassured on my fate… I was being tortured in the worst ways, beaten with electric cables and iron bars,” he said.
He demanded an apology from Mr Maliki and said he would name the officials who tortured him in due course.
my relatives and people close to me that these services will use all means to trap and try to kill and liquidate me either physically, socially or professionally,” he said.
His allegations of abuse mirror claims made earlier by his family, who said he had been beaten, suffering a broken arm, broken ribs and internal bleeding.
The Iraqi military earlier denied the allegations, but following Zaidi’s news conference Sami Al Askari, an adviser to Mr Maliki, said his torture claims should be investigated.
Zaidi’s family has been preparing to throw a party for him.
He has reportedly received offers of money, jobs and even marriage from across the Arab world.
His relatives say he was offered a golden horse by the Emir of Qatar.

Obama’s fury at Baghdad bloodbath

Published by admin under shoes

US President Barack Obama has led international condemnation of Sunday’s double suicide bomb attack in Baghdad that killed at least 132 people.
Mr Obama branded the attacks – the worst in more than two years in Iraq – “hateful and destructive”.
UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband said they were a “terrible reminder of the threat from violent extremism”.
The blasts hit the ministry of justice and a provincial government office near the heavily fortified Green Zone.
More than 520 people were also injured when the two car bombs exploded in quick succession at 1030 (0730 GMT) as people headed to work during the rush hour.
The White House said President Obama had spoken to Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki and President Jalal Talabani to pledge his support.
Mr Obama said in a statement: “I strongly condemn these outrageous attacks on the Iraqi people, and send my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones.
“These bombings serve no purpose other than the murder of innocent men, women and children, and they only reveal the hateful and destructive agenda of those who would deny the Iraqi people the future that they deserve.”
not succeed.”
The International Zone, or Green Zone, is the administrative heart of the capital.
The Iraqi authorities said the suicide bombers drove their vehicles into parking bays and detonated them.
Traffic limits in the street were eased six months ago and blast walls repositioned as part of a programme which Mr Maliki said showed progress was being made against insurgents.
Dozens of the dead were said to be staff members of the ministry of justice and Baghdad provincial government.

Nurtured by the state

Published by admin under shoes

A white-haired elder joined in. “We used to hear about bombs going off in other places,” he said. “We would try to imagine what that was like. Now we know the result is total devastation.”
We met the man who admits that he is to blame for the blast. For legal reasons we cannot identify him. He was hooded and chained during our interview.
He is linked to militants fighting in Afghanistan and said that he was storing explosives for them. When asked if he ever thought of the friends and neighbours he had killed, he wept as he replied.
“I am ready to go on my knees and beg forgiveness from everyone affected,” he said.
“I pray the dead rest in peace. Had I known what would happen I would never have kept the explosives. I am grieving because I made such a big mistake and so many people died.”
But he said he would have been happy if his explosives had killed British and American forces in Afghanistan.
“I would have been very happy,” he said. “If God gives me a chance in the future I’ll go and fight the Americans and the British.”
The school teacher said that he was trained at a militant camp in Afghanistan in 1998, but never fought there. He stressed that in those days jihadis like him had the government’s support.
Some of the groups menacing Punjab now were nurtured by the state in the past. They were tools of government policy in Afghanistan and Kashmir. While they still appear to have their protectors in Pakistan’s powerful spy agency, the ISI, these days they are feeling the cold.
The militants did not take kindly to being dumped, according to a policeman heavily involved in hunting them down.
“They were like cheap soldiers for the Pakistan army,” he said. “They were pampered by government agencies. But after 9/11, the government stopped providing money, support and places for training and they turned on the state. They are like jilted lovers.”
Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, has expressed concerns about the growing threat in south Punjab.
Britain and America will be hoping that Pakistan reacts more quickly to this danger than it did to others in the past.

Goldstone rejects Israel protests

Published by admin under shoes

UN human rights investigator Richard Goldstone has rejected Israel’s claim that the peace process would be harmed by his report on the offensive in Gaza.
Judge Goldstone said there was no peace process at present and Israel’s foreign minister did not want there to be one.
The Goldstone report, which has been endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council, accuses both Israel and Hamas militants of committing war crimes.
Mr Goldstone’s remarks came in a conference call with American rabbis.
“It’s a shallow, utterly false allegation,” Mr Goldstone said of Israel’s attempt to brand his report as an obstacle to peace.
“What peace process are they talking about? There isn’t one. The Israeli foreign minister doesn’t want one,” Mr Goldstone said.
“If the Israeli government set up an appropriate, open investigation, it will really be the end of the matter. That’s where the report would end as far as Israel is concerned,” he added.
He was speaking days after Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman spoke of his belief that the Arab-Israeli conflict would not be resolved in the coming years, and people should “learn to live with it”.
Palestinians and human rights groups say more than 1,400 Gazans were killed in the 22-day conflict that ended in January, but Israel puts the figure at 1,166. Thirteen Israelis, including three civilians, were killed.
In the report, Mr Goldstone calls for the war crimes allegations to be referred to the International Criminal Court at The Hague unless the parties to the Gaza war investigate them.
If the report comes before the UN Security Council, the US is expected to veto any call for ICC action against Israel.

Arrests at holy site in Jerusalem

Published by admin under shoes

Israeli police and Palestinian worshippers have clashed at Jerusalem’s most sensitive religious site.
Police arrested 12 people who were throwing stones in the Temple Mount compound, known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, a police spokesman said.
The site houses both the al-Aqsa mosque and the Jewish holy site, the Western Wall. A spokesman said police did not enter the al-Aqsa mosque itself.
The clashes came amid rising tensions in the past weeks over the area.
On Saturday, Jerusalem police announced they would strengthen policing around the Temple Mount after Muslim leaders urged Palestinians to defend Jerusalem against “Jewish conquest.”
There have been rumours among Palestinians that Jewish extremists were planning on harming the holy site – though no such attempt has been made.
Last month, police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse 150 Palestinian protesters who had thrown rocks at non-Muslims who entered the al-Aqsa mosque compound.
Israeli police said the visitors were foreign tourists, but Palestinians said they were Jewish extremists.
In the most recent incident, Israeli police spokesman, Micky Rosenfeld, said 12 people had been arrested.
He added: “This morning at eight o’clock a number of youngsters from east Jerusalem started rioting inside the Temple Mount itself.
“Our police units entered in order to disperse them after stones and rocks as well as even petrol bombs were thrown at our officers.”
Security forces used stun grenades to disperse the demonstrators, and officers remain on high alert in the area.
Police also said they had arrested the Palestinian minister for Jerusalem affairs, Hatem Abdel Qader, on charges of incitement.
Palestinian officials said police had sealed off the compound and that some 100 Palestinian worshippers remained inside.

A Short Introduction To Aquarium Cycling Methods

Published by admin under shoes

By setting some time aside to proper cycling, your aquarium will be much easier to maintain, since the cycling process aim to produce a thriving population of
beneficial bacteria that will convert harmful waste products into less dangerous compounds. You need two types of beneficial bacteria in your aquarium.

The first type converts ammonia into nitrite, while the other type converts nitrite into nitrate. Ammonia will be produce by the metabolism of your fish and extracted
from the gills and in fish poo. High levels of ammonia are dangerous to fish, but fortunately enough there exist a group of bacteria that can convert ammonia into
nitrite. Nitrite is actually even more toxic than ammonia, but the second group of bacteria will turn the nitrite into nitrate, which is much less toxic. The nitrate
can then be removed by regular water changes.

The beneficial bacteria will of course need to be introduced to the aquarium, and this can be made by simply adding one or two sturdy fishes from species that cope
well even with high levels of soluble waste. Their waste products will contain live bacteria than can start to colonies suitable homes in the aquarium, such as sponge
filters and gravel. If you want to jump start the process, you can purchase a bacterial solution from the fish store that contains the right type of nitrifying
bacteria. You can also use gravel or sponge from an already established aquarium when you set up a new one, but you should keep in mind that this can introduce
benevolent bacteria as well.

When you purchase a bacterial culture form the fish store, you should always carefully read the label and avoid getting nitrobacter bacteria. Earlier, nitrobacter
bacteria was believed to be very powerful converters of nitrite to nitrate, but scientific studies have now showed that nitrospira bacteria are much stronger
converters. Some fish stores still sell nitrobacter bacteria, even though nitrospira bacteria are a better choice.

Another method of cycling the aquarium is the so called ‘fishless cycle’. This cycling method is much less frequently used compared to the one that uses cycling fish,
but it has grown increasingly popular during the last few years. During fishless cycling, you will add small amounts of pure ammonia to the water together with
nitrifying bacteria and wait for them to form large colonies. You will need a test kit to measure the amounts of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Investing in a test kit
is however a good idea even if you use fish to cycle your aquarium.

A third cycling method uses plants and is commonly referred to as ’silent cycling’. This method requires a densely planted aquarium with thriving plants. You should
therefore avoid sensitive, demanding and slow growing plant species. During the silent cycling, the plants will consume nitrogenous compounds and use them as
nutrition. Aquarists fond of this method like it since it does not produce the ammonia and nitrate spikes that are common during other forms of cycling. You should
keep in mind that when plants absorb nitrogenous compounds they incorporate them leaves and stems. If the plant, or a part of the plant, dies and starts to decay, the
compounds will therefore be re-released into the water. Pruning the aquatic plants and removing any dead parts are therefore important.
