Highly analytical couples, such as scientists, may be more likely to produce children with autism, an expert has argued.
Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, of the University of Cambridge, said the phenomenon might help explain the recent rise in diagnoses.
He believes the genes which make some analytical may also impair their social and communication skills.
A weakness in these areas is the key characteristic of autism.
It is thought that around one child in every 100 has a form of autism – the vast majority of those affected are boys.
The number of diagnoses seems to be on the increase, but some argue this is simply because of a greater awareness of the condition.
In a paper published in the journal Archives of Disease of Childhood, Professor Baron-Cohen labels people such as scientists, mathematicians and engineers as “systemizers”.
They are skilled at analysing systems – whether it be a vehicle, or a maths equation – to figure out how they work.
But they also tend to be less interested in the social side of life, and can exhibit behaviour such as an obsession with detail – classic traits associated with autism.

A second study has suggested high blood pressure problems in pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia increases a woman’s risk of heart disease in later life.
The study in the British Medical Journal found those who had experienced raised blood pressure in pregnancy had a long-term risk of hypertension (high blood pressure), an increased risk of stroke and a slightly increased risk of heart disease.
The long-term risks were highest for women with pre-eclampsia.
The researchers, from the University of Aberdeen, said: “Women with a history of gestational hypertension or of pre-eclampsia or eclampsia are at increased risk of hypertensive and associated diseases in later life.”
They said if there was a greater awareness of the link, it could lead to earlier diagnosis and better management of patients, potentially reducing the numbers made ill or killed by such diseases.

Jeff and Sarah Hennessey, from Wrexham, said their daughter Abigail was on dialysis for five days, but was now off the machine, recovering at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool and “eating and drinking quite well”.
Both Abigail and her mother ate at the Llay Fish Bar, but cannot be sure they picked up the infection there.
Karen Morrisroe-Clutton, from Wrexham, also ate food from the chip shop, and remains “seriously ill” at the town’s Maelor Hospital.
Her mother has criticised Wrexham council after its inspection of the premises a year ago found poor hygiene conditions.
The inspection also found major non-compliance with food legislation and the authority gave its lowest possible star rating of zero stars.
Pierre Bartlett, the solicitor for Ramazan Aslan, the owner of the fish bar, said his client was co-operating fully with the investigation and his thoughts were with the families of those who are ill

China’s first manned spacecraft has entered orbit, making it the third country to send a human into space.
A Long March 2F rocket blasted off from the Gobi desert launch pad at 0900 (0100 GMT), and the Shenzhou V spacecraft was orbiting Earth 10 minutes later.
The craft, carrying a single astronaut, Yang Liwei, is expected to circle the planet 14 times, returning to Earth after a flight of about 22 hours.
President Hu Jintao was present for the launch, and said it was “the glory of our great motherland and a mark for the initial victory of the country’s first manned space flight”.
I feel good, see you tomorrow,” Yang Liwei told mission control from space.
The launch was to have been shown live on national television, but Chinese state TV decided it would only show it later.
However, programmes were interrupted to announce the successful launch.
The English-language channel CCTV-9 echoed the words of American Neil Armstrong when he became the first man to walk on the Moon.
“If these were small steps, then now we are taking a giant leap into space,” the announcer said.

Historically, the famous stout has an image which goes beyond the drinks market.
Guinness ran a famous “Guinness is good for you” advertising campaign in the 1920s.
The slogan allegedly stemmed from market research: people had told the company that they felt good after their pint.
In England, post-operative patients used to be given Guinness, as were blood donors, because of its high iron content.
In today’s highly competitive UK market, the drink competes with Carling, Fosters, Stella Artois and Carlsberg for top brand sales and is ahead of John Smiths and Kronenbourg 1664.
Sales declined in the last six months of 2003 with volumes down 3% compared to the same period a year earlier.
In Ireland, its ancestral home, sales have fallen 7% in the same period.
Diageo said it would increase the volume of Guinness produced in Dublin by 50% and invest a minimum of £15m ($27.7m) in the St James’s Gate brewery.

Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, the leader of the Shia Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC), had a long history of opposition to the rule of Saddam Hussein, and became one of Iraq’s most powerful figures after his downfall.
Hakim lived in exile in Iran for more than two decades before returning home in April 2003, one month after the US-led invasion.
Following the assassination in August of that year of his brother, Ayatollah Muhammad Baqr al-Hakim, he became head of SIIC’s precursor, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (Sciri).
Attacked for co-operating with the Coalition authorities and accused by others of being an Iranian agent, he nevertheless helped lead the Shia-dominated United Iraqi Alliance (UIA) to victory in the January and December 2005 parliamentary elections.
Despite Sciri’s political power and popular support, Hakim stepped back from the limelight and allowed other senior members to come to the fore. However, few doubted the fact that he was still in control.
In 2007, with support for the UIA-led government and Sciri dwindling amid widespread sectarian violence and claims of rampant corruption, he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
After a long battle, during which he was treated by doctors in Iran and the West, Hakim died in a hospital in Tehran on Wednesday.

Cpl Payne’s barrister, Michael Topolski QC, said the former soldier hoped the inquiry would provide a “clearer and fuller picture” of events.
Mr Topolski said: “Donald Payne has accepted and he does accept that he violated his duty to those detainees.
“For that, through us, now without hesitation he wishes to publicly apologise to each of them and in particular to the family of Baha Mousa.”
The inquiry later adjourned for the day and will reconvene at 1000 BST on Wednesday when the first witness will be Mr Mousa’s father.
